STOP, DROP AND LEAVE THAT SSD DRIVE ALONE!

"Solid State Drives (SSDs) are renowned for their reliability and speed, but like any storage device, they're not immune to failure."

When our clients experience data loss in any form, it can be profoundly distressing. Despite one's confidence in handling the situation independently, the pathway to do-it-yourself (DIY) data recovery is rife with potential pitfalls. Venturing into the realm of solid-state drive (SSD) data recovery without adequate guidance is akin to navigating a labyrinth while blindfolded. Despite one's perception of making headway, there is a risk of circling back or, worse, inadvertently triggering an irreversible data loss event.

This is where Wildfire Data Recovery comes into play. Visualize us as your adept companions in the sphere of solid-state drive data recovery. The landscape of SSDs is intricately laden with hazards and challenges, from covert wear leveling and TRIM commands, rendering data recovery from SSDs a precarious undertaking, to the intricate algorithms safeguarding data akin to a dragon hoarding its treasure. These are not merely obstacles; they represent full-fledged challenges engineered with the sole objective of impeding access. After all, data security is inherently ingrained in every SSD.

HOW TO INCREASE CHANCES OF SSD DATA RECOVERY SUCCESS

As explained above, SSD recovery is often possible without going through extra complex steps. Our Wildfire Data Recovery engineers will take over and guide you through the recovery process. However, there are several things that you can do (or avoid doing) to increase your recovery chances:

Red "IMPORTANT" label with exclamation mark.
  1. 🛑 Disconnect the SSD: Noticed some files have gone missing from your SSD, or your SSD drive is no longer detected by your PC, Apple or laptop? First, unplug that SSD the moment you sense something is not correct.

Do you want a pro tip? Hook it up to a different computer for a rescue mission. This way, you dodge the sneaky TRIM command that could make your files ghost you for good. No spare computer or feeling like it's outside your comfort zone? Just power down your device and contact our expert SSD data recovery engineers.

If all this sounds like climbing Everest in flip-flops, that's where our team comes in. Our 24-hour, Brisbane-based SSD data recovery services are here to take the heavy lifting off your shoulders. We are here to help our clients retrieve their precious missing files, while reducing the stress inherent with every data loss case.

2. 🧰 SSD Data Recovery Apps: If your computer's missing that life-saving data recovery app or software, avoid installing anything new on the SSD where your files have gone missing. Not being careful where you install data recovery software can cause permanent overwriting of your user data.

Here's a pro move: always have a data recovery tool ready to roll on another drive. This way, when your files decide to go on an unexpected journey, you're just a few clicks away from starting the search party, with no waiting required. Think of it as keeping a flashlight handy when the power goes out. Let's set you up to bounce back from data mishaps with zero drama!"

Windows will prompt users to format their disk if the operating system detects a logical error or another fault.

"At Wildfire Data Recovery, we always urge our clients to stop using a formatted drive as soon as possible to maximize the chances of data recovery success. If you suspect that you have accidentally formatted your hard drive, it's essential to immediately turn off your computer and seek the assistance of our expert team of data recovery engineers."

WHAT IS AN SSD? WHAT IS AN HDD?

Mechanical/classical hard drives can take up to 55g of shock or physical impact when operational. Solid state SATA hard drives, on the other hand, can take up to 1.5kg when operational. This is why solid state hard drives or flash media are preffered for mobile phones, laptops, external hard drives or any other data storage device that is on the move.

WHAT IS DATA RECOVERY

"When data can no longer be accessed in its usual way, it’s time to bring in a recovery expert."

The image appears to be completely black, suggesting that there might be nothing displayed within it or that it is a solid.

At Wildfire Data, we define data recovery as the process of retrieving lost, deleted, corrupted, or otherwise inaccessible data from storage devices such as hard drives and solid-state hard drives (SSDs), regardless if they are internal, external, SATA or M.2.

Hard drives and solid-state hard drives, are the two most common and primary types of storage devices used in modern computers, laptops, mobile phones, gaming consoles and both can experience data loss due to a range of issues. Mechanical or classical hard drives, like Toshiba 1TB Canvio USB3.0 External Hard Drives, use magnetic disks to store data, which can become damaged due to physical impacts, electronic failures, or natural wear and tear over time. SSDs, on the other hand, use NAND flash memory chips to store data, which can experience issues such as electrical failures, firmware corruption, or logical errors that can result in data loss. NAND is a type of non-volatile flash memory technology that is commonly used in solid-state storage devices such as USB drives, memory cards, and solid-state drives (SSDs). NAND stands for "NOT AND" and is a type of logic gate used in the design of the memory cells used in NAND flash memory. Overall, NAND flash memory is a widely used and versatile storage technology that has revolutionized the way data is stored and accessed in modern computing devices.

The above is a brilliant example from Linux TechTips as to the highly controlled and complex environment which is hard drive data recovery.

SOLID-STATE HARD DRIVE, DATA RECOVERY SERVICES

"We can perfrom solid state hard drive data recovery from all of the below data loss scenarios, plus many more."

At Wildfire Data Recovery Brisbane, we understand that solid-state hard drive data recovery can be a challenging and complex process. Solid state drives are more prone to permanent data loss if incorrect steps are taken to rescue data, this is why advanced expertise and specialized tools are required to be successful. Here are some solid-state hard drive data recovery problems that Wildfire Data Recovery can help our clients with (plus many more:

SOLID-STATE, RECOVERY FROM PHYSICAL IMPACT:

Physical impact can cause damage to the various components of an SSD, which can prevent it from working. Solid-state drives contain no moving parts, but they are still vulnerable to physical shock. Our Wildfire Data engineers have created a list of some of the most common issues that lead to data loss following physical impact of a solid state hard drive:

  • Head Crash: While an SSD has no read-write heads like a hard disk drive, physical impact can still cause the memory chips to get misaligned and cause data loss.

  • NAND flash chip damage: Solid-state drives contain NAND flash chips that store data. Physical impact can cause damage to these chips, making it difficult or impossible to retrieve the data stored on them.

In summary, physical impact can cause a range of issues that can prevent an SSD from working, including damage to the Printed Circuit Board, electrical component damage, head crashes, or NAND flash chip damage.

ACCIDENTAL HARD DRIVE FILE DELETION OR FORMATTING OF ENTIRE DEVICE:

One of the most common issues we see here at Wildfire Data Recovery. Formatting or accidental file deletion can impact an SSD hard drive in numerous different ways. When you format a solid-state drive or delete a file, the data is not completely erased from the drive. Instead, the operating system marks the space that the data occupies as available, which means that new data can be written to that location. As a result, the deleted data is no longer visible to the user, but it still exists on the drive until it is overwritten by new data. Our Wildfire Data engineers have listed some of the most common ways data loss occur due to accidental deletion or formatting:

  • File System Corruption: Formatting or deleting files can cause corruption to the file system, which can make the drive inaccessible. The file system is responsible for organizing and managing files on the SSD. When it becomes corrupted, the SSD may not be able to read or write data correctly.

  • Partition Loss: Formatting an SSD can lead to partition loss. A partition is a logical division of the SSD into smaller sections that can be used to store data. If the partition is lost, the data stored on it may become inaccessible.

  • Overwriting of Data: When new data is written to an SSD after a format or accidental deletion, it can overwrite the deleted data. This can make the deleted data unrecoverable.

If you have accidentally deleted files or formatted your SSD, it's essential to stop using the drive immediately and contact Wildfire Data Recovery Brisbane services to increase the chance of recovering your lost data.

SOLID-STATE HARD DRIVE, CONTROLLER CHIP:

The solid state hard drive controller chip plays a critical role in managing the flow of data in and out of an SSD. If the controller chip is damaged, it can result in various issues, such as data corruption, data loss, or even complete failure of the SSD.

If the controller chip is damaged, it can result in issues such as:

  • unreadable sectors,

  • incorrect mapping of data or,

  • inability to access data stored on the drive

The impact of damage to the SSD controller chip on data recovery depends on the extent and nature of the damage. In some cases, if the damage is minor, it may be possible to recover data by replacing the controller chip or repairing it. However, if the damage is severe, the recovery of data may be difficult or even impossible.

Wildfire Data Recovery employs specialiy trained engineers that can bypass the damaged controller chip in the SSD or implement techniques that extract the data directly from the NAND memory chips on the SSD, but this process can be complex and requires specialized equipment and knowledge.

SOLID-STATE HARD DRIVE, ELECTRICAL FAILURE:

At Wildfire Data Recovery Brisbane we understand that electrical failure of the SSD Printed Circuit Board (PCB) can have a significant impact on our clients' ability to access the data on their hard dirves. The PCB is responsible for providing power to the NAND flash memory chips, managing data flow, and communicating with the computer's operating system.

Our Wildfire Data engineers have identified some ways that electrical failure of the SSD PCB can affect data recovery:

  • Power issues: If the PCB is unable to provide the necessary power to the NAND flash memory chips, it can result in data loss or corruption. In such cases, data recovery may require replacement of the PCB or transfer of the NAND chips to a new, functional PCB.

  • Firmware issues: The firmware of the SSD is stored on the PCB. If the PCB experiences an electrical failure, the firmware can become corrupted or lost, which can cause the drive to become inaccessible or unreadable. Data recovery in such cases may require repairing or replacing the PCB, or in some cases, directly accessing the NAND flash memory chips to retrieve the data.

Data recovery may require replacement or repair of the PCB or direct access to the NAND flash memory chips. It's crucial to seek the help of a professional data recovery service to maximize the chances of successful data recovery.

COMMON INDICATORS OF SSD LOGICAL FAILURE

Unlike classical or mechanical hard drives, there are no physical moving parts in solid-state hard drive or any other flash media. This makes any solid-state device immune from traditional mechanical hard disk issues.

  • 💥 Power Failures: SSDs require a capacitor and power supplies, which are vulnerable to malfunctions: especially in the case of a power surge or a power failure. Furthermore, power failures cause SSDs to corrupt existing data, even if the drive itself hasn’t failed.

  • ✍️ Limited read/write cycles: The other possible problem with SSDs is that they have limited read/write cycles: an issue with all kinds of flash memory.

  • Extremely slow read/write speeds: This is a pretty self-explanatory indicator for SSD corruption. If you witness unusually slow read/write speeds, chances are you are dealing with a corrupted or deteriorating SSD.

  • 🧱 Bad blocks: Much like “bad sectors” on HDDs, there are “bad blocks” on SSDs. We are typically looking at a scenario where the computer attempts to read or save a file, but it takes an unusually long time and fails. The system eventually gives up with an error message. If the computer crashes with a blue screen of death (BSOD), it may indicate logical errors in the SSD.

  • ⚠️Inability to access data: If the SSD is unable to read or write data, it can be a sign of logical failure. This may result in error messages or the drive being inaccessible. One symptom is that your computer will be unable to boot or the operating system will fail to load, this is a very clear sign of logical solid state hard drive failure.

It's important to note that some of these indicators can also be caused by other issues, such as hardware failures, software issues, or malware. In general, physical SSD failure is more severe and difficult to recover from than logical SSD failure. While logical failure may be resolved through software-based solutions or data recovery techniques, physical failures require a much more comprehensive and complex approach. If you suspect logical SSD failure, it's recommended to seek the help of a professional at Wildfire Data Recovery to diagnose the issue, ID the fault and recover your data. Call us today on 0424 053 510.

An illustration showing how the trim function works on an SSD hard drive.

Unlike HDDs, SSDs use non-volatile flash memory to store data. This means that when an SSD is powered off, the data remains intact. However, if the SSD experiences a failure or malfunctions, it can be difficult to recover the data due to the SSD's architecture. SSDs have a limited number of write cycles, and as data is written and deleted over time, the drive's performance can deteriorate, making it more difficult to recover data.

THE WILDFIRE HARD DRIVE DATA RECOVERY PROCESS

"It is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Our hard drive data recovery process is customised for every client."

1.

COMPREHENSIVE RECOVERY REPORT

Once we process and diagnose our client's device(s) we complete a comprehensive diagnostic report. It marks on the total costs (inc. projected costs) of the recovery, the chance of success, the issue with the hard drive and why it requires data recovery services and finally the expected date of completion. We offer our customers a comprehensive diagnostic report free of charge with our standard service, to find the root of the failure and allow our engineers to find the right path to recovery.

2.

ONCE DIAGNOSIS IS OVER...

Following the completion of our comprehensive recovery report, we complete our diagnostic and consultation services with our clients and provide a projected success rate for their particular device and failure (these success rates are based on thousands of recoveries). Once the diagnostics are completed buy our experienced data recovery engineers, and the data recovery options are clear, we provide a firm no-obligation price quote. This quote can always be rejected by our clients and they can take their device and shop around.

3.

ONCE THE JOB IS APPROVED...

Once our clients provide us with the green light and approve the quote and the comprehensive report, our engineers conduct the invasive hard drive repairs and if necessary, use custom-designed, in-house, tools to recreate file systems and partition table information our clients need to progress to the next level of hard drive data recovery. This step can take a number of days, to a number of weeks depending on the complexiety of the hard drive failure. For example, a LEVEL 1 Logic Hard Drive Data Recovery may take 2-5 days, while a LEVEL 4 Complex Mechanical Hard Drive Failure can take up to 4 weeks or longer.

DATA RECOVERY PRICING

In the below table, our clients can find an example of how hard drive data recovery services may be priced. Wildfire Data Recovery uses a "level of complexity" model (as explained below) instead of a per/hour payment scheme. As always, NO DATA -- NO FEE.

🟩 Accidental Deletion (Logical Hard Drive Data Loss):

Accidentally deleting the wrong file may feel devastating, but it’s actually the least costly and complicated data loss scenario one can encounter. That’s because deleted files remain physically present on storage devices until they are overwritten by new data.

COST: $290 -- $450

  • What is data recovery and how much does it cost?
Data recovery is a complex and at times, very time consuming process. It is a combination of many fields from computer science and engineering, IT to electronics, to software engineering, coding, electrical engineering and much much more. Due to this extremely specialized and difficult process, a data recovery engineer is a self taught professional that has a passion for all of the aforementioned fields and it is this passion that leads to their ability to sometimes do what is considered "impossible". Furthermore, the software, hardware and the many tools that go into data recovery are extremely specialized and very costly. Every electronic device and digital storage media contains information, and that information can be made inaccessible due to mechanical or logical failure. The process of accessing, retrieving and restoring that inaccessible data is called data recovery. The data recovery process varies based on the type of media. If the failure is logical (deletion, operating system failure, etc) then specialized software is used to recover the data. If a mechanical failure occurs such as physical damage, water or fire damage, recovery requires a professional staff and certified Cleanroom facilities.
  • How long does it take to get my data back?
Unfortunately there is no easy answer here. Most of the recoveries we perform are completed within 48 hours. However, sometimes jobs can last 2-4 weeks (especially with servers and large RAID combinations). Your engineer will inform you thoroughly of your wait time.
  • What data recovery packages do you offer?
Our data recovery plans start from Level 1 (Basic Software Recovery) to Level 5 (Complex Malware, Ransomware, Hardware plus other damage). Complexity dictates which category (or level) your device will be placed in and the final cost that you will incur based on the successful return of your lost data. Different devices also incur different costs. For example, a RAID system (which can contain anywhere from 2-30 hard drives or more) will have a higher data recovery success fee then an individual hard drive at the same complexity level. Our basic data recovery packages are: 1. LEVEL 1 – SIMPLE LOGICAL DATA RECOVERY SERVICES: $299+GST. This level includes all devices with basic logical issues such as deleted data, formatting, accidental deletion due to human error, operating system malfunctions (this includes software glitches or bad updates that affect the function of your operating system), virus and malware issues, file system errors, overwriting of data plus much more. 2. LEVEL 2 – COMPLEX LOGICAL DATA RECOVERY SERVICES: $520+GST. The complexity of data loss can increase based on various factors that go beyond simple logical data loss scenarios. Some of the factors that can contribute to increased complexity in data loss situations include RAID configurations (data loss can become more complex due to the interdependence of multiple drives and potential issues with RAID controllers), file system damage, disk or hardware issues from logical problems (damages sectors, corrupted data which prevents the drive from being read), encrypted data, legal or compliance implications (in certain cases, data loss may involve legal or compliance issues, adding complexity to the recovery process).
  • How does the data recovery process work?
Wildfire Data Recovery begins each case with a risk-free media evaluation. Our certified and trained Engineers test to see if your device has recoverable data, after which we provide a price quote and estimated turnaround time for the recovery. Based on how complex this recovery is and the level of damage, the time can range from a few days to several weeks. The evaluation we provide here at WDR is no-obligation and we will return your media to you if you decide not to use our services, FREE of charge. We provide free diagnostics with our standard service and stand by our “No data, No recovery fee” guarantee. If you accept the quote, we treat physical media issues with tested and safe technology and utilize a Class 10 ISO 4 Cleanroom. Engineers will make a copy of your drive and treat logical issues to restore files to a working condition. After the recovery is complete, we will send a list of recovered files and will send your data back on FIPS validated portable storage or on transfer media you provide.
  • When can data recovery be performed and what are some examples of the different forms of data recovery?
Data recovery is possible on almost any device that can hold data. Data recovery is even possible on cloud based operating systems, servers, locked-out iPhones, and Samsung mobile phones plus much more. All data recovery problems can be placed into one of three categories, logical damage, physical damage, or a combination of the two. Devices with logical problems can be restored using software only or logical solutions. Recovery is also possible for a device that has sustained physical damage (such as dropping a mechanical hard drive from a height). In this case, engineers would use our class 10 ISO 4 clean room to replace the faulty parts and recover your data. Wildfire Data Recovery has successfully recovered data from media that has been burned, submerged in water, and physically damaged. Our forensic toolkit and expertise gives us the edge over other data recovery companies and we can perform data rescues determined to be impossible by others.
