SATA

Desktop and laptop hard drives, 2.5-inch SSDs, NAS and CCTV drives. 2003 to today.

Recovery note: do not run a failing SATA drive through a cheap USB dock. Repeated adapter resets can turn a recoverable head or firmware fault into platter damage.

PATA / IDE

Older desktop and laptop drives, early external cases and media players. Common before 2007.

Recovery note: these drives are 20 to 40 years old. Lubricant thickens, heads stick and boards corrode. We keep PATA imaging hardware and donor stock for Seagate, Maxtor, Fujitsu, IBM and other legacy brands.

M.2Bare circuit board 22 mm wide, 30, 42 or 80 mm long (2230, 2242, 2280). Gold edge contacts with one notch (M key, usually NVMe) or two notches (B+M key, usually SATA). One mounting screw.Plugs flat into the board

M.2 SSD: SATA or NVMe

Laptops, desktops, Surface devices and consoles. M.2 is the shape; the notch and label say whether it is SATA or NVMe inside.

Recovery note: M.2 failures are usually controller or firmware, and TRIM erases deleted data in the background. Do not keep power-cycling a dead M.2 SSD. Chip-off reads are available when the controller is gone.

SAS / SCSILooks like SATA, but the gap between the data and power sockets is filled in (SFF-8482), so it will not fit a SATA port. Legacy SCSI: wide 68-pin or 80-pin (SCA) connectors.Servers, SANs and rack RAID

SAS / SCSI

Server, SAN and enterprise RAID drives, often 10,000 or 15,000 RPM. Dual-port, built for 24/7 duty.

Recovery note: SAS drives usually fail inside arrays. Do not rebuild, reinitialise or force an array online after a failure. See RAID data recovery.

USBMicro-B (flat, two-part, about 12 mm wide), USB-C (oval, about 8.4 mm wide) or Type-A on an external case. The drive inside is SATA or NVMe, connected through a bridge board.Portable and desktop external drives

Recovery note: keep the case, cable and power pack with the drive. WD My Passport and many LaCie drives encrypt on the bridge board, and some Seagate externals build the USB bridge into the drive board itself.

  • Many are RAID or JBOD boxes with two to five drives inside
  • The enclosure controller can hold the array layout, so send the whole unit

Recovery note: do not swap drives between bays or let the enclosure rebuild after a failure. Label the bay order and send the unit intact.

Protect the data first

Switch it off

Stop reconnecting a clicking, grinding, beeping, freezing or intermittently detected drive. Powered-off drives do not get worse.

Do not repair the file system

Decline CHKDSK, First Aid, initialise, format and rebuild prompts until the original media has been safely imaged.

Keep the enclosure and cables

For external drives, the bridge board, power supply and original cable can carry encryption keys and identify the failure path.

Photograph both sides

Capture the main label, model number and connector. The recovery form accepts up to five device photos.

Catalogue policy: model specifications are published only when supported by manufacturer documentation, reputable archives or Wildfire laboratory records. Unknown OEM variants are not guessed.
