Stop using the device and disconnect it safely. Do not initialise, format, update firmware or run repair utilities against the only copy of important data. SSDs handle deleted data differently from hard drives, and background processes such as TRIM and garbage collection can reduce the amount of recoverable data.
If the SSD is unstable or repeatedly disconnecting, avoid further power cycles. Record any error message and note whether the device was dropped, exposed to liquid, overheated or affected by a power surge. This information helps us choose the safest diagnostic path.
SATA SSDs, NVMe SSDs and portable SSDs use different controllers, interfaces and firmware. A method that works for one model may not work for another. Model identification matters because controller support, encryption and NAND layout can determine what recovery options are available.
For laptops and workstations, the failed storage may also be soldered to the main board or protected by device-level encryption. We will explain any model-specific limitation after diagnosis rather than promising a result before the device has been examined.
