Water-Damaged Hard Drive Data Recovery

With a wet or flooded drive, the liquid, power state and time since exposure all matter. Preserve the original device and get handling advice before another test.

Before another test

Disconnect external power if it is safe to do so. Do not reconnect, heat, rinse or put the drive in rice. Ask the laboratory how to handle and pack it.

The type of liquid changes the assessment

Fresh water, salt water, drinks and dirty floodwater leave different residues. Corrosion and electrical damage may develop around a board or connector even when the outer housing appears dry. Tell the laboratory what the liquid was, how long the drive was exposed and whether it was operating at the time.

An enclosure is not proof of protection

An external case can trap liquid around its USB board and power connections. Damage to seals or the drive housing may create further problems. Do not open the sealed disk assembly to check whether water reached the platters; that introduces a different contamination risk and may disturb useful evidence of the original fault.

Dry-looking does not mean safe to power

Residue can remain after visible moisture disappears. A drive that lights up or spins may still have unstable electronics or read problems. Repeatedly reconnecting it to see whether it has recovered can make the eventual work harder. Record what was already observed and leave further tests to assessment.

Recovery follows the condition, not a fixed cleaning recipe

The laboratory first establishes the affected areas and whether cleaning, electronic work or internal work is appropriate. The aim is to obtain readable data safely, capture it to separate storage and then verify useful files. Cleaning a board is one possible step, not a guarantee of recovery.

If it is part of a larger system

For an external drive, keep the enclosure and original electronics. For a NAS or RAID, label each drive's original bay and explain which units were exposed. Do not initialise an array or replace member drives as a recovery experiment. An accurate device history helps avoid treating a multi-drive problem as an isolated disk fault.

What to include with your enquiry

  • The liquid type and exposure time
  • Whether the drive was powered during or after exposure
  • Original enclosure, boards and any detached parts
  • Drive bay order for NAS or RAID systems

Assessment, costs and approval

The standard diagnostic and Express post-in label are free. Recovery work is quoted after assessment. Levels 1–2 have no upfront recovery charge; Levels 3–4 have an agreed upfront component and a conditional success fee. Level 5 is custom quoted, including its upfront fee and any conditional success fee. The upfront component is not refundable once work begins. Priority services carry separate charges.

Your estimate should identify the intended outcome, any critical file register, fees, recovery media and timing before you decide. See the No Data, No Fee policy and hard drive recovery price guide.

Questions about water-damaged hard drive data recovery

Can I leave a wet hard drive to dry and try again?

Visible dryness does not establish that residue, corrosion or electrical faults are resolved. Ask the laboratory for condition-specific handling advice and avoid another power-on attempt when the files are important.

Does rice help recover a water-damaged hard drive?

Rice does not repair corrosion or electronic damage and may introduce debris. It is not a data recovery procedure. Preserve the device and arrange an assessment.

What should I tell you before posting a flooded drive?

Describe the liquid, whether it is still wet or contaminated, its power history and any cleaning already attempted. Obtain packing instructions before sending it; unusual contamination may need special handling.
