Hard Drive Not Detected? Data Recovery Options
A missing drive can have several causes. The key decision is whether a connection check is appropriate—or whether further attempts put irreplaceable files at risk.

Do not click Initialise, Format or Erase when you need the existing files. Stop testing if the drive was dropped, is noisy or repeatedly disconnects.
Not in Explorer is different from not detected at all
A drive can be absent from File Explorer or Finder while the operating system still lists a physical device. A missing drive letter, unsupported file system or damaged partition may be involved. If you already have a screenshot of the disk utility, include the device name and reported capacity. Do not change partition settings to make the drive appear.
Wrong capacity is useful evidence, not a diagnosis
Zero bytes, an unexpected device name or an incorrect capacity can occur with firmware, bridge or hardware problems. A USB adaptor may also change what the computer can see. Record the exact message and the enclosure or adaptor in use. A firmware update intended for a working drive is not a general recovery procedure.
Know when to stop connection checks
For an undamaged, stable device, the manufacturer's connection guidance may help identify an ordinary cable or port issue. That is a different situation from a drive with physical damage, abnormal sound, unstable reads or irreplaceable unbacked-up files. In those circumstances, discuss the next step before repeated reconnections or scans.
Keep external-drive electronics together
Some portable and desktop external drives rely on their original bridge or native USB electronics for access to the data. Removing a bare drive and connecting it directly by SATA may not reveal usable files, even if the drive itself is readable. Send the original enclosure, board and cable with the device.
What a recovery assessment can resolve
The lab distinguishes a connection or enclosure fault from firmware, electronic, mechanical and file-system problems. If readable access is established, imaging captures the data to separate storage. The quote then reflects the work and limitations found, rather than a price chosen from the phrase 'not detected'.
What to include with your enquiry
- The exact error or existing screenshot
- Whether the reported capacity is correct
- Original enclosure, adaptor and cable
- Any drop, abnormal noise, formatting or previous repairs
Assessment, costs and approval
The standard diagnostic and Express post-in label are free. Recovery work is quoted after assessment. Levels 1–2 have no upfront recovery charge; Levels 3–4 have an agreed upfront component and a conditional success fee. Level 5 is custom quoted, including its upfront fee and any conditional success fee. The upfront component is not refundable once work begins. Priority services carry separate charges.
Your estimate should identify the intended outcome, any critical file register, fees, recovery media and timing before you decide. See the No Data, No Fee policy and hard drive recovery price guide.
Questions about hard drive not detected? data recovery options
Should I initialise a drive that Windows says is unknown?
Not when its existing files are needed. Initialising changes disk information; it is not a recovery step. Keep the prompt or a screenshot and ask for advice.
Does a drive that spins have a software problem?
Not necessarily. A spinning motor does not establish healthy heads, firmware, electronics or recording surfaces. The full symptoms and an assessment are needed.
Can a different enclosure fix a missing external drive?
It may resolve an ordinary enclosure fault, but some drives depend on their original electronics for access to the data. Preserve those parts and seek advice before moving a damaged or encrypted drive.
