Hard Drive PCB & Electrical Damage Recovery
A dead drive is a symptom. Finding the failed component—and preserving the original electronics—is the first step towards recovering its files.

Disconnect the drive and keep its original PCB, enclosure and power adaptor. Do not remove protection components or try another board.
No power does not establish a PCB failure
A drive that does not spin may have a faulty power supply, connector, USB bridge or internal component. A visible burn mark is useful evidence, but it does not show whether the rest of the drive survived. Describe the event: a surge, a replacement adaptor, a spill or a board swap changes the starting point for assessment.
Why a matching board may still be wrong
The printed model number is not the whole compatibility check. A hard drive can depend on calibration and firmware information associated with its original electronics. Some external drives also depend on their bridge or native USB board for access to encrypted data. Keeping the original parts gives the laboratory more options than a replacement board alone.
What an electronics assessment needs to establish
The useful questions are whether power reaches the appropriate circuits, whether the original drive-specific information can be preserved, and whether another fault remains after the electrical problem is addressed. A board repair that makes the spindle turn is not, by itself, a completed data recovery.
The goal is a readable image, then usable files
Where an electronic repair or compatible replacement makes reading possible, the next task is to capture readable sectors to separate storage. File reconstruction and verification follow from that image wherever technically possible. The original drive should not become the only home for the recovered files again.
If someone has already replaced the board
Send both boards and identify which one was original. Include any ROM chip that was removed, photographs taken before work and the repairer's notes. Be specific about which board was powered and whether any components were transferred. Do not repeat a failed experiment to demonstrate it.
What to include with your enquiry
- Original PCB and all replacement boards
- External enclosure and original power adaptor
- What happened immediately before the failure
- Any chip transfers, soldering or previous repair notes
Assessment, costs and approval
The standard diagnostic and Express post-in label are free. Recovery work is quoted after assessment. Levels 1–2 have no upfront recovery charge; Levels 3–4 have an agreed upfront component and a conditional success fee. Level 5 is custom quoted, including its upfront fee and any conditional success fee. The upfront component is not refundable once work begins. Priority services carry separate charges.
Your estimate should identify the intended outcome, any critical file register, fees, recovery media and timing before you decide. See the No Data, No Fee policy and hard drive recovery price guide.
Questions about hard drive pcb & electrical damage recovery
Can I buy a donor PCB with the same number?
A matching number alone is not enough to establish compatibility. Required drive-specific data may need to be preserved or transferred, and other damage may be present. Keep the original board and ask for assessment before a swap.
Is a completely dead drive usually recoverable?
Silence does not establish what failed or whether the recording surfaces are intact. Recovery depends on the electrical and internal damage, the availability of required original data and the condition of the stored files.
Will PCB recovery cost less than a head replacement?
An electronics problem may require different work from a mechanical failure, but the symptom does not determine the price. The written estimate follows assessment and states any upfront component and conditional success fee.
